Year 5 Class Page

Welcome to Year 5!

One piece of Maths and English homework will be given out every week on Fridays, to be completed and returned to school by the following Wednesday. As well as this, most weeks there will be a spelling list to learn as well as reading on a regular basis (at least 1 book per week). Children will also need to consolidate their learn times table facts worked on in class. We hope that you will support your child in completing and delivering their homework on time.

This term the children will learn about:

  • Written methods of addition and subtraction – including consolidation of place value knowledge, decimals and money.
  • Shape, space and measure – including classifying, visualising and describing the properties of 3D shapes; converting between units of measure, time and drawing line graphs.
  • Written methods of division and multiplication and fractions – including finding common multiples and factors of numbers; simplifying fractions and recognising equivalence and comparing fractions.

The children will always have the opportunity to consolidate their knowledge of methods taught through ‘real life’ problem solving.

This term, we will be covering two Science topics; Plant life cycles and Properties of materials. During the first topic of Plant life cycles, the children will have the opportunity to dissect a flower to take a closer look at the different parts and learn about their functions. They will also learn about the processes of pollination, seed dispersal and photosynthesis.
