Maths

In maths children will be covering number and place value, addition and subtraction, money and measures, shape and numbers, sequences and fractions.

In addition to maths lessons, children will be having an arithmetic session once a week. This will focus primarily on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions of numbers. This is to help prepare and support them for their end of year 2 SATS.

They will also be practising their 2, 5 and 10 times tables and must be able to recall them as quick as they can say their name! Please support your child by practising these at home too.

Literacy

In Literacy we will be following the ‘Wordsmith’ scheme of work, focusing on fiction and poetry. They develop their knowledge of sentence constructions, joining two or more sentences with ‘and’ and correct punctuation, and explore using expanded noun phrases to add more detail. The writing tasks include writing a letter in role, writing a continuation of one of the stories, and writing their own story based on their own experiences.

In poetry they will identify patterns in the poetry and work towards class performances of the poems, trying to learn them by heart along the way. They create new whole class poems - based on those already read - and then they evaluate a class performance of one of their compositions.

Homework

Approximately 1 hour of homework shall be given out each week on a Friday. This will alternate between maths and English.

Spellings will be sent home each week and will either be based on the sound learned that week, or a spelling pattern.

Reading books are sent home each week. Mrs Slater’s phonics group will also have RWI books sent home.

Science

Our first topic is ‘All Living Things’. After completing this topic, the children should know:

· Characteristics of being human.

· Characteristics of all living things.

· Differences between living/dead things and things that have never been alive.

· Differences between living things such as plants and animals.

· Characteristics that are essential for keeping us alive.
