Mathematics

In maths we will be learning to count, read and write numbers to 100. We will begin to recognise place value of numbers beyond 20. As well as this we look at identifying one more or less than a given number.

We will be counting in multiples of twos, fives and tens (times tables).

We will also begin to learn about addition and subtraction and how to solve problems using these operations.

Measurement involving length, mass and capacity will be taught. We will also learn how to tell the time, recognise coins and use them in real life situations.

We will be learning about 2D shapes and 3D solids, their names and their properties.

All of the above will be used to solve practical maths problems in different contexts.

Literacy

This half term we are continuing with a revised RWI programme. We will be recapping sounds and blends already covered from sets 1 and 2. We will also be introducing new sounds and blends from set 3.

RWI will consist of a mixture of reading and writing activities. The children will be learning to spot the various sounds within words.

Along with this we will be using the literacy scheme Wordsmith to develop the children’s reading and writing skills. We will also be writing cross-curricular through our various Cornerstones topics.

Homework

Approximately 1/2 hour of homework will be given out each week on a Friday. This will alternate between maths and English.

Spellings will be sent home each Monday to be learnt for test following Monday.

RWI books and reading books are sent home each week.

Reading books to be changed each Monday. However reading folders should be brought in to school every day.

Science

Our topics for Science this term will be about seasonal changes linked to autumn and winter. We will be looking at variation in day length, different weather conditions and how they affect us and other living things.

We will also be learning about materials. We will learn the names of different materials and their various properties and uses. We will be carrying out simple investigations and experiments.
